Not shooting when in Auto Focus

I was gifted a Nikon d40, and it worked fine 2 years ago, it's been sitting in its bag and the closet since. I wanted to get back into using it, however, i cannot get it to shoot if its all set to auto-focus, i have to set it to manual focus, and nothing turns out focused. Is this a lens problem?
