What is the year model and engine size of the vehicle?
A quick way to find out what's wrong is to get the vehicle's ODBII port scanned using an appropriate scan tool to see if any DTC (diagnostic trouble codes) have been logged. The code will tell you what problems there are with the engine and/or the transmission.
If you're in the USA, larger retail chain auto parts stores e.g. AutoZone will do this for free.
