The check engine light is warning you that there is a problem either with the engine or the transmission.
The light will be on until the problem is fixed.
The quickest way to find out what the problem is, is to get the vehicle's OBDII port scanned with an appropriate scantool, to see what DTC codes (diagnostic troubleshooting codes) have been logged by the ECM (Engine Control Module)
If you are in the USA major auto parts stores e.g. AutoZone, PepBoys, O'Reilley's etc, will do this for free apparently.
