jdennis61, it is possible that you do have a bad battery. that does happen more frequently now since it will become tougher to purchase newly manufactured battery. You may have a new old stock battery. The other thing you want to check is that the flex cable is properly seated. You want to check the dock connector. Make sure there are not bend, broken or corroded pins. Clean it with some isopropyl alcohol a soft brush and some puffs of compressed air. Try a different cable and a different power adapter (AC charger supplies higher amperage than your USB port which might be favorable). Also, and this is the toughest part, check the battery connector on the logic board. This particular model has trouble with it breaking of the board. Take a look at [https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/213074/Battery+Cable+Connector+Solderable+Board+Useless|this question] as well as many others on this forum. You will continue to get the sad face until your iPod actually connects to iTunes and is recognized as an iPod that needs to be restored. That will update the firmware on your iPod.
