Is it only browsers that you are having internet problems with, e.g. do you use an Email program and does that work OK?
Have you tried resetting IE (internet options > Advanced > Reset)
Try running in "safe mode" and going online to see if the browsers work OK.

With regards to storage, insert the largest capacity SD card that you can afford into the card reader socket and set it up as a 2nd drive i.e. a "storage" drive. That way all your data folders (My Documents, My Pictures , My Downloads etc), can be transferred to it and all your data will be stored there while all the OS and program data can be stored on the laptop's fixed storage. It is unobtrusive so it shouldn't be in the way when handling the laptop. The only downside is if you ever want to use the card reader for anything else
