Excessive Fan noise after being on for a while?

I wanted to know if this is a known issue and what I can do about it. The fan is really working overtime and it is hard to work when hearing that noise. Also, I don't want this thing to catch on fire if it is possible for that to happen.

It is a Powerbook 867 titanium model. thanks!
