I'd play the guilt card with the other person to pay for half of a new system.
Looks like the displays connector (orange ribbon) was ripped off the display it's self. So you'll need a new unit (can't be repaired). If your handy you might be able to find a junker of the same model (series) and transplant the display over and any damaged case parts. The cost of a new display unit (new from Toshiba) and repair will be more than a new laptop.
Have you tried starting it up connected to a external monitor yet?
First remove the broken connector off of the cable end so it's not shorting (check for any other loose wires as well). Can you get it to power up and switch the display to the external display (check your manual on what key to press to switch the display output). If you can get that far you have a way to at least get to your stuff to transfer it to a new system.
