Try the following: take a photo in delayed shutter mode. The first press will flip the mirror up exposing the curtains of the shutter. Do this without a lens so you can see the shutter blades.

In my case I could see a hole burnt in the shutter due to sun damage while using a tele lens.

I ordered replacement curtain blades and will attempt at replacing them on my D7100.
