Power tip is bent

What type USB-c cable can I use to replace a bent tip on my charger.

I have a Thinkpad which was pulled off the couch by my cat.  Stop laughing.  The tip of the USB-C power cord bent when it fell onto the floor.  I was able to bend it enough to have it work,  but I would like to replace the tip.  I am not scared of soldering, etc. but I want to make sure I use a good tip.  I was thinking of buying a good quality USB-C cable and cutting it and matching up the wires.   Before I strip or cut the end off and examine the wires etc, I was hoping to get some feedback. Any suggestions?

Hi,

Don't know about the USB-C connector but was wondering if it would be easier to open the adapter and solder the wires of an appropriate new USB-C cable with the correct plug already connected at one end, into the adapter.

If there are no recessed screws under the adapter’s information label then sometimes if it is a plastic welded type case with a seam around it they can be opened with minimal damage by using a sharp broad bladed tool e.g. a 1.5" paint scraper and placing it along the seam and giving it a short sharp tap with a hammer. The idea is that you’re tapping it but not following through and trying to drive it through the case. The other way is if you have access to a vise that you insert the adapter into the vise with the seam along the top of the jaws and slowly tighten the vise until the case cracks along the seam

I've had a 75% success rate opening these types of cases with no visible or little damage, using the first method and have seen the second method work just as well, (I don’t have a vise). What happens is that it cracks along the seam and then it can be gently prised open and separated. There is usually an inner lip along the seam’s inside edge that may break but this is not seen when the case is fitted back together. It can then be glued back together using ordinary paper glue as some other glues such as "supa glue" don't hold with certain plastics and can actually melt them. I then tightly wrap a strip of electrician's tape around the case for good measure.

The other 25% of the time the case breaks and has to be glued back together as best as possible.

Perhaps something to consider

Hi, I’m actually having quite a similar issue, with a similar laptop (lenovo). Basically, the power adapter end is old, and has worn out, which seems to be a common experience. It would charge only when in a very specific configuration, turning my laptop into a desktop. Anyways, I cutoff the end, and it appears the issue is with the blue wire (see picture).

I’m not sure what the three wires correspond to, but in any case, if I could replace this component I think I could splice it back onto the charger. I don’t know what the name of it is, or where to find it. I could probably fix it myself if needed, but I would imagine it is a cheap piece and not worth the hassle.

If appropriate I’d be willing to try and write up a guide/experience report for this (if successful) since it really is a common issue.

thanks.

Hi @cyanobacteria ,

Good idea about the guide.

This may be of some help Creating a Repair Guide

Regarding the wires:

The convention with DC supplies is that Red is always +ve polarity. The -ve(or earth) can vary but it is usually either Black or White). The 3rd wire in your particular case, i.e. the Blue wire, may be some sort of sensor or ID lead used by the maker for whatever reason.

Your particular plug looks like a USB 2.0 type, USB 2.0 pinout so replacing the plug is not as difficult as a USB-C would be. USB-C wiring pinout

You would only have to know which pin the 3rd wire should be on i.e. pin 2 or 3

Unless it is a USB-C that is and wired only as necessary

Cheers
