this exact same thing started happening to me after my dog knocked over my imac. it was running funny so I rebooted and got the folder with the "?" is it possible the hard drive was just knocked loose? when I boot from install CD the hard drive doesn't even show up as accessible to test or verify. Thanks!

jea, this folder means, the imac don't know from where to boot. this could be a bug all the way from the hard drive to the main board. this means, a connector unplugged itself or the hard drive fail.
if last happened, you need a new hard drive, but don't need to say ;)
