iPod won't connect to computer/won't start up

Please bear with me, as I'm a little not all that tech savvy. I've had my iPod for quite a while, and for the most part, it worked well. About 18 months ago, it got into the habit of deciding I had no music. I fixed it by reformatting it, and then restoring it in iTunes. It happened a few more times, and I was always able to get it back and running.

The last time it happened, about a month ago, I was going on a long trip, so I left it at home. I got back, reformatted it, and then...nothing. Now my computer doesn't even recognize that it is plugged in.

I'm willing to poke around and try to fix it myself following the guidelines I've seen here, as I'm fairly handy, but I'm not actually sure what it is I need to fix.

When I turn it on, it starts to go to the apple logo, which is what it does when I reboot it as well. However, while the logo shows up, the screen doesn't get bright.

Can anyone help? I'd be eternally grateful!

This is what Apple suggest.:)

  1. Put iPod into Disk Mode.
  2. iPod should appear in the iTunes Source pane and on the desktop or in a Finder window, or in the My Computer window.
  3. If a message appears that says the volume could not be mounted and asks if you want to initialize the disk, choose to initialize iPod's disk. Use Mac OS Extended format (HFS Plus) if you have a Mac, or FAT32 if you have a Windows PC.

Warning: This process cannot be undone. All of your songs, videos, and other files will be deleted. Always make a backup of your important data.

  1. Follow the steps to update or restore iPod. If you manually put iPod into Disk Mode it may need to be reset before you can use it.

and here is a previous post that deals with a question similar to yours and may provide you with an answer to resolve your issue iPod will not sync, is stuck on Apple Logo .

" 1. press and hold menu and select for 5-10 seconds to reboot the iPod

2. when the screen turns black for a reboot, press play and select at the same time and hold it for 5-10 seconds (this should put the iPod into disk mode)

3. connect the iPod with the usb cord to the computer (start itunes - it could take a few minutes until itunes recognizes the iPod)

4. when the iPod is in disk mode - open your file manager (finder on mac or explorer on windows) and go to the iPod - the option to see hidden folders must be activated, then go to "iPod_control/music" (if you don't have a backup of your files - copy all subfolders to your computers hard drive).

5. delete all subfolders on the iPod's hard drive

6. eject the iPod in itunes and unplug it from the computer

7. reconnect it to the computer and the iPod should now be recognized from itunes, select the device and restore it (this will take a while)

Good Luck :)
