Technical Writer at iFixit

Hey there! I’m Kevin, and I’ve been digging into the latest devices for iFixit since November 2023.

I first linked up with iFixit through my work on the Right to Repair campaign. For four years, I helped the good folks at the Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) push for state and federal legislation to guarantee our freedom to fix the stuff that we own. That work took a few forms: researching and writing reports about the ways that manufacturers—particularly tractor-makers—lock people out of independent repair; organizing community members, farmers, and medical device repair technicians to advocate for Right to Repair reforms; and directly lobbying decision makers at all levels of government.

I’m still involved in that push—but my current role allows me to look at the exciting elements of technology alongside the ones that undermine user control. Finding the words to do it is the best part.

Education

BS/BA, Industrial & Systems Engineering, 2015, University of San Diego

Experience

Most of my physical repair work (my dishwasher, the derailleur on my Santa Cruz mountain bike) tends to come out of necessity. But the proactive fix I’m most proud of making is the one I helped make in Colorado state law.

For years, I worked with farmers to make sure they had everything they needed to fix their tractors when they broke. I researched the problems they faced, demonstrating repair restrictions cost U.S. growers $4.2 billion each year, and how dealership consolidation is making the problem even worse. I testified in countless hearings where leaders sided with powerful interests like tractor manufacturers in dealers over the local farmers who were setting off the alarm.

I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t frustrating. But we knew we had the facts on our side and the support of individual farmers, as well as groups in the agricultural community like the National Farmers Union. We kept pushing.

Earlier this year, we finally broke through. Working with coalition partners like CoPIRG, Rocky Mountain Farmers Union, and Repair.org, I helped lead the team that got the country’s first agricultural Right to Repair bill signed into law. This photo is from the signing ceremony held at the Colorado state capitol (in front of a tractor hauled in by iFixit!)

Favorite Fixes

We all remember our first smartphone battery swap. Mine was helping a friend replace the one on his iPhone 7—while adding some custom artwork in the process.

Kevin is a technical writer at iFixit. Before joining the team in November 2023, he worked along iFixit in the push for Right to Repair reforms as a campaign director with PIRG. When he’s not writing on the latest tech, he's advocating for ethical tech policy.
