Where to find a replacement screen

hey all, my niece recently stepped on my macbook and cracked the screen. normally with this type of damage i would be more than happy to bring it into apple for a repair but from a phonecall i had with them it was around $1000 CAD to replace..? which is quite alot considering. does anyone know where i can find a sutible replacement screen so that i can do the repair myself? i feel confident enough to do it i just cant find one. iFixit seems to be out of stock and i dont think eBay is a good place to look unless i am told otherwise. any help is appreciated, thanks!

Well. You might be in a bit of a bind. Displays for the 2021 14" and 16" MacBook Pro are inherently pricey due to their use of mini-LED technology. This technology is still quite new, so Apple can charge a premium for it. Apple's Self Repair program lists this part at $672.33 USD (roughly $900 CAD) with a $93 USD credit if you return the broken display to them. Unfortunately, I don't think this program is available yet in Canada and suspect the US parts store will not ship out of the country.

Additionally, they pair the display to the logic board during the repair process (something only they have the ability to do). So even swapping in a new OEM Apple display, harvested from another Mac could have the potential for issues. I've seen reports ranging from weird visual issues, to the display not working at all when this pairing process is not done.

There are ways to get around that, but they are not easy and even skilled technicians might not want to risk the procedure since it involves desoldering chips off the TCON board from the original display and soldering them onto the replacement display. It's just another one of the may ways Apple shoehorns people into using their own repair services.

I honestly haven's seen these in stock anywhere I would consider reputable yet. I have seen replacement display assemblies and just the panel available on EBay and AliExpress, but I would definitely consider those "buy at your own risk" sort of endeavors. :(

Loathe as I am to say it. Apple might be your best bet on this one. At least right now. Unless you have a friend in the states who can order you one of these through Self Service and ship it to you, or they do in fact offer this in Canada.

Apple now offers self repair as an option But!! You need to use their part, and no you can’t just use anything as Apple has serialized the display to the logic board.
