didi, evaluate the damage first. Check your hinges, top cover, cables and cable connector. I have seen laptop that had this type of damage (well sort off, never seen one that got ripped apart" that needed only a few parts. Check to see if your still works with an external monitor. Proper trouble shooting is the key to saving money ;-)

Ouch!

I'd play the guilt card with the other person to pay for half of a new system.

Looks like the displays connector (orange ribbon) was ripped off the display it's self. So you'll need a new unit (can't be repaired). If your handy you might be able to find a junker of the same model (series) and transplant the display over and any damaged case parts. The cost of a new display unit (new from Toshiba) and repair will be more than a new laptop.

Have you tried starting it up connected to a external monitor yet?

First remove the broken connector off of the cable end so it's not shorting (check for any other loose wires as well). Can you get it to power up and switch the display to the external display (check your manual on what key to press to switch the display output). If you can get that far you have a way to at least get to your stuff to transfer it to a new system.

Good Luck!

Hello Didi.

It depends on what exactly is damaged. Looking closely at your pictures it seems that you will need to replace the whole lid assembly. This includes the display, bezel, top lid. Worst case scenario is that the hinges will also need replacing, along with the display brackets. you should also test the hard drive as the shock caused could have also damaged the drive.

With regards to it being worth a repair, it depends on the price of a replacement or for the whole repair. If you do not feel comfortable ordering parts and repairing yourself then try to get a few quotes and compare for the best deal for you. Do you have any insurance covering the laptop?

Hope this helps,

Wes
