Background and Identification

First introduced in 1987 with the Canon EOS 650, Canon EOS (Electro-Optical System) cameras are autofocus single-lens reflex cameras (SLR) and mirrorless cameras produced by Canon Inc. Since 2005, all new cameras in the EOS line have used digital image sensors rather than film. The current line features Canon’s current digital SLR (DSLR) range. Since 2012, the EOS line also features the Canon EOS M mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera (MILC) systems. In 2018, the line was further extended with the addition of the EOS R camera, Canon’s first full frame mirrorless interchangeable lens system.

Most of the EOS cameras are supported by the EF lens mount, the standard lens mount on Canon’s SLR digital cameras. EF stands for “Electro-Focus”, meaning automatic focusing on EF lenses that is done with an electric motor built into the lens. There are no mechanical connections between the moving parts in the lens and in the camera. The aperture and focus are controlled by the electric motor. Prior to the EF mount, the FD Lens mount was the most prominent and it supported only manual-focus lenses. It connected a photographic lens to a 35mm single-lens reflex camera body. Then, the EOS R full frame camera introduced the RF mount, a new lens to the system.
