Ice makers normally make clear and cold ice cubes. You may not notice that they’ve gradually gotten cloudy. What you may notice is that the cubes are speckled with dark dots. If either of these strange conditions exist, follow these troubleshooting steps below to get your ice back to normal.

First Checks

Have you recently installed a fridge or a new water filter? Refrigerator filters are normally replaced every 6 months. The water system then needs flushing after a filter installation or replacement.

  • Using a rigid container, depress the water dispenser for five seconds, and then release it for five seconds. Repeat this process until water flows steadily and all air has been purged.
  • Run the water until it’s clear. Filters can deposit some of their internal media and discolor or change the taste of the water. Irrigate plants with this first batch of filtered water.

Samsung Fridge

A normal ice cube from a Samsung fridge should be a cloudy white color and be shaped like an orange slice. Samsung ice makers use rapid freezing technology which traps small amounts of minerals, oxygen, and nitrogen inside the ice cube, giving it a cloudy appearance. Therefore, it's normal for the ice to be white and foggy.

Old or Faulty Water Filter

The overall quality of your water can contribute to cloudy ice cubes.

The minerals in your water are not harmful and are more common in areas with hard water. These minerals, usually calcium, and magnesium, will lead to cloudiness in the ice.

If you don't have a water softener then you probably have hard water, which has higher mineral levels.

  • Consider using filtered water or a water purification system to improve water quality.
  • If your fridge has a water filter, replace the filter every 6 months.

Temperature and Freezing Rate

When water freezes slowly or at inconsistent temperatures, impurities are moved to the center of the ice cube, leading to cloudiness.

Rapid freezing in a well-functioning freezer usually minimizes this effect.

Dirt in the Water Supply

Dirt in the water supply is sometimes the source of speckled water. If there was work on water supply lines in your neighborhood, you can flush a few gallons through to clean it out. Contact your plumber if this doesn't work.

Damaged Ice Bucket

A damaged ice bucket may lead to specks of plastic or other impurities clouding your ice mix. Replace the bucket if it seems aged or cracked.
