Note: this page applies to newer Samsung TVs, not rear projection units or projectors.

First Steps

The first thing to check is the Standby Light. This is the red light that is on the lower edge of your TV and it is the place where you are supposed to aim your remote when you are watching the TV.

You usually see it on when the TV is off (really standby) and you don't see it when the TV is on or is unplugged (really off). If you see it blinking it indicates a problem, generally with power supply issues.

Depending on the standby light, we will check different things first.

  • A solid standby light means the unit is getting power, so we don't have to check the cord or the plugs right away. We can start by resetting the TV or resetting the remote. If that doesn't work, skip over the Electrical Supply section—your TV is receiving power.
  • No standby light could mean the unit is on with no display, or that the power to the unit is disconnected. We will start with the electrical supply.
  • The blinking standby light means a power problem, it is likely the power supply board but there are a significant number of other potential causes. We will start with electrical supply as well but with a different initial focus.

Software Glitch

Sometimes the software on your TV gets hung up on a process and is having trouble returning to normal function. A reset should get it out of any bugs or bad loops. To reset your Samsung TV you will need to do the following:

  • Unplug your TV and leave it unplugged for 60 seconds.
  • While unplugged, press and hold the power button on the TV for 30 seconds—and we mean a full 30 seconds ("one-onethousand", "two-onethousand", etc.).
  • Wait another 30 seconds—a more casual 30 this time—then plug the TV back in.
  • Try to turn on the TV. Does it work now? Yay! you're done! If not, go on to the next item.

Faulty Electrical Supply

Start by unplugging the cord from the rear of your TV and re-insert it making sure it is well seated. This is important because a loose connection here can cause power problems.

If your TV has no light at all, you'll want to first make sure that the outlet it's plugged into is providing power.

  • Plug another device (like a lamp) into the outlet the TV was plugged into.
  • If that outlet isn't providing power, find one that is (you can use your test lamp to check) and plug the TV in there.
    • If a solid red light appears, try turning on the TV. If that doesn't work, jump to the next section.
    • If the red light appears but is blinking, continue.

If the red light is blinking on and off, it's likely that your TV has a bad power supply. However, before you rip your TV open, we've got a few less invasive things to try that could solve the problem:

  • Start by removing any surge protectors, extension cords, and power strips from the path between your outlet and TV. You'll want to plug your TV directly into the outlet (that you've confirmed was functional earlier).
    • If the light becomes solid, the problem was with one of the cables in the middle. You can add the cables into the system one by one until the blinking light reappears to determine which one of them is faulty.
    • If the light continues blinking, jump to the Input Source Mismatch cause below. If that doesn't work, try the HDMI Problem cause before skipping Backlight Has Failed and jumping straight to Power Supply Problems.
      • You'll want to determine that the issue isn't with the input source or HDMI cable before dealing with the power supply.

Remote Software Glitch

Another cause of unresponsiveness can be a problem with the remote. Resetting the remote is simple:

  • Remove the batteries—really remove them both completely.
  • Hold the power button on the remote for 30 seconds—and we mean a full 30 seconds ("one-onethousand", "two-onethousand", etc.).
  • Replace the batteries (change them if possible).
  • Test the TV for operation.
  • You can use a digital camera to see if your remote is actually sending a signal.
    • Aim the remote (with the batteries back in) at your phone camera (turn the camera on first) and see if there's a light.
    • If there is, take the remote into another room; the continuous signal may be confusing your TV. Try operating the TV with no remote and see if it turns on.
    • If there isn't press a button on the remote.
    • Check to see if you get a light from the end of the remote. If so the remote is trying to send a signal. If not replace the remote.

Input Source Mismatch

The TV can display a black screen and actually be functioning properly if the input source does not match the setting on the TV. The power light may also be blinking.

  • Check the input source to see that it matches what’s connected to the TV. If you have HDMI 1 set as the source and your source is actually connected to HDMI 2 you will not see anything.
  • If the power light is off, the TV may actually be on and just trying to use the wrong source.
  • You should be able to change the source either from your remote or from a button on the side of the TV.

Faulty HDMI Cable/Connection

If the TV is shut down while connected to an Xbox, Wii, or other device via HDMI it will frequently not turn on unless the connected device is on.

  • Try turning on the connected device.
  • Check if your TV now turns on.
  • If this is the case, disconnect the device once the TV is on and then shut down the TV.
  • Test it after you shut it down and see if it powers up again.

Backlight Malfunction

If you've ruled that your TV is definitely receiving adequate power, your TV might actually be on (especially if the Standby Light is off) and the black screen is caused by a failed backlight.

  • You can check this using a flashlight held close to the screen.
  • Look for a faint picture in the lit area; if it's there, the backlight has failed.
  • It may be a bad power supply board feeding the backlight, or the backlight components.
  • Another possible indicator of a shorted backlight is a blinking standby light.
  • You can replace the backlights yourself; you can order units to fit your TV, and replacement involves just screws and connectors.
  • There is a test to see if the backlights have actually failed, but it requires removal of the rear cover, and operating the TV with the cover removed. You can do it while checking the power supply in the next steps.

Faulty Power Supply

At this point, you are likely dealing with a unit that has been displaying a blinking standby light. For the next tests, you will need to open the back of your TV. This can be both physically difficult or you may not feel comfortable opening the TV up.

If you choose to do so, there are a couple of tests you can do to see what has failed.

  • Remove the power cord and all other cables connected to the unit.
  • Remove the back cover of the unit.
  • The power supply board will be the board located where you plug the cord into the rear of your TV.
    • You will want to be cautious around parts of the power supply board, especially those on the portion marked HOT as the voltages there are appreciably higher.
  • You should look at the power supply board for burn marks or swollen components, especially capacitors (see pic below) These can fail in a way that the TV will start to behave strangely and then just go dark.
Block Image

Bulged Capacitors

  • There is also a fuse on most power supply boards. If it is blown (it can be checked for continuity), it is usually a sign of other failures on the board.
  • if everything looks good, move on to the last step below.

Motherboard Failure

A quick test that will show if the motherboard (the main board on the back panel of the TV) has failed.

  • Unplug the TV. (It should already be so)
  • There should be a black cable (See red box in the pic below) running from a connector on the Power Supply Board (the tan board on the right in the pic below) to a connector on the motherboard.
Block Image
  • Disconnect the cable,
  • Plug in the TV and turn it on
  • Observe the backlight through the small holes in the rear of the metal plate. If it is now lit, if so this is a general indication of a failed motherboard.
  • If failed, replace the Motherboard. Here is a link to some available motherboards at iFixit.

What if my tv turn on but eventually just turn off and can go on and off for a wile till doesn’t turn on again keep it un plug for a couple days then will turn on how can I fix this? does anyone know?

Mauricio Coral - Ответить

Mauricio, You might try doing a Factory Reset. The fact that it works right after it is unplugged sounds like a software issue. Some TVs are set up to try to update their software automatically often by a wireless connection. When they can't find the update they start power cycling of and on.

Try this page for more information: Samsung TV Keeps Turning Off

Also Try This page Samsung TV Turns On By Itself

Hope this helps.

My tv does not have a red light but flashes a black screen. I have unplugged and held the power button but it does the same thing. Any other ideas to help?

Megan Poreda - Ответить

Hello Megan,

Do you mean that the screen goes black and then comes back on again, and it does this over and over? If that's the case, the first thing would be to investigate the power supply board. If the picture is clear and complete when it is on, that says that most of the "picture producing" parts are capable of working correctly, and since the failure is no picture at all, it's something associated with an almost on-off condition. So you might try ******unplugging the power cord from the back of the TV (not the wall outlet) where it goes into the Power Supply board. Sometimes this connection has troubles and just unplugging it and possibly cleaning it can help. Another item to try is look carefully at the Power supply board for bulged capacitors. They can cause the power supply to be unstable.

My Samsung TV shows a solid red light but when I try to turn it on, the light goes out, it plays the start up jingle, then the light comes back on again. I tried resetting the TV (power off and 60/30/30 seconds sequence) and the first time it started to work again. I turned the TV off with the remote and tried to turn it on again and it wouldn't come on. I also tried to turn in on using the power button to no avail. I repeated the reset procedure and it didn't work the second time. Do these symptoms suggest anything specific? Do you have any additional ideas to try?

pzny - Ответить

Unfortunately some Samsungs get stuck in a sort of bootloop. This is often caused by the TV trying to update itself over WIFI and when it can't find a network, it goes into a frenzy of trying to shut off, and turn on again until it just stops. First of all what model number do you have? Try resetting the unit again, but unplug it for 2 minutes, and hold down the power key after you unplug it for a minute. Then plug it back in and turn it on with the power button on the TV not with the remote. If it will turn on then go to the settings and turn off anynet+ if it is on. There are more details on the pages listed in the comment at the top of the list. The on-off and won't turn on problems can be related. You might want to look at your power cord and unplug it from the REAR of the TV and then plug it back in to the TV again. sometimes that connection grows temperamental and weird power issues happen.

I'd also try posting this on our Answers Forum, there are a lot of capable people there who may be able to help.

My samsung tv will not turn on. I've tried numerous things and it all goes back to the red light blinking acting like it's gonna turn on but rarely does. I've had this problem since I got this TV and sometimes it will come on by chance if you turn it on by remote but it can take hours. Any help would be appreciated.

Ruby Maxwell - Ответить

Hello! I think that you might be looking at a power supply board failure. I'd first try and disconnect and reconnect the cord where it goes into the back of the TV, not the wall plug. That connection can fail and cause the TV to not come on. But from the sound of it, I'd try replacing the power supply board. You should also ask this on our answers forum. Here is a link to our answers forum, and if you do that, make sure to provide your model number. A blinking red light means that the TV "knows" it has a problem, so you might also want to work through some of the steps like the input mismatch. If your TV is actually turned on the red light will go out, so the blinking light is significant.

Bill Gilbert -

My Samsung tv seems to be stuck trying to turn on? I’ve removed all the power cables and HDMI, tried resetting the Wi-Fi but the standby light blinks red twice the tv starts to turn on and the screen goes blueish grey then flicks black and turns off again as if it’s been turned off and the red light blinks twice again, this just repeats constantly and the only way to turn the tv off is to remove the power cable from the wall socket? Any ideas what this could be?

Dan - Ответить

Two blinks is usually a power supply problem. If you have any surge protectors or the like disconnect them and plug the TV in directly to the wall. See if it functions normally. If not then the next step is to replace the power supply board. You can remove the back of your TV and then look at the board where the power cord is connected. Look for burned or discolored components or bulged capacitors on that board. If you spot such, you have found the problem for sure. That would be my best guess. I would go through the steps starting at faulty power supply.

the standby light on my Samsung tv does not come on.

Franklin Mendes - Ответить

No Standby light either means the TV is actually on already (the flashlight test can be tried in this case, to see of the backlight has failed) or you can also have an issue with failure of the power supply itself. Sometimes the place where the cord is attached to the TV (it's a plug itself) can fail and the TV will act dead. So try disconnecting the cord from the back of the TV. Also often the standby light is connected to a small pc board, and if that board fails, you will have an unresponsive TV.

Hi , ive had the flashing red lights , TV wouldn't turn on . I've just changed most boards on the back 🤣 starting with the power board. I had a spare tv with a cracked screen, so used that as parts . It was the mother board in the end , I think . I've stopped the red light flashing but now can't get a picture or change source etc . Will it now be the back light ?

Thanks paul

mpaul5571 - Ответить

Yes the flashing light can be any of the boards, and can even come from mismatched connections. Was the spare TV the exact same model as your current one? I'm suspicious of the power supply board. A quick test of both the power supply and the backlights is to disconnect the cable that runs from the power supply board to the mother board, power on the TV and see if the backlights all come on. Be careful doing this as some substantial voltages may be present.

Bill Gilbert -

Hi Bill

The TV is the exact model , I've changed all boards now 5 in total . Still just getting blank screen . Tv red light is now working when pressing remote, red light goes to stand by and blinks as normal when pressing buttons.

Samsung said its probably the power board , can't see any visible damage to both I have , the board that 5 strips that go around the front connected too was brownish and something might of went on that board .wish I could send pictures.

Ive given up for today and going to have a beer to relieve the stress before I throw it out the window 🤣, I will try what you said tomorrow and let you know

Much appreciate paul

My samsung tv has a red light and when I go to turn it on it makes a squeak noise, the light flashes twice and then goes solid.

I have a Samsung un55j620dafxza tv, no red light, no blinking light, I took back off checked out power board, cause my son was gonna play Xbox and accidentally hit remote and turned tv off, when that happened he heard a pop, so I was thinking power board but everything looks ok, haven’t checked with meter yet! Any suggestions, can a pop come from mother board or other T board? I can get all boards for $70 but what if it’s the back lights? Any help would be great!

james11 - Ответить

First question to ask: was the pop really from the internal components of the TV or was it just a pop from the TV speakers? Quick check, with the power off, disconnect the mainboard from the power board, and then power up the TV again, and see if the backlights come on. If they do it's likely the mainboard, although a pop could be the fuse that is on the T-Con board. T-Con boards are comparatively inexpensive. If you can replace all the boards for $70 and your backlights are working, then I'd say go for it. If the backlights don't work then you would need to see if you are getting voltage to the backlights. It's well over 100 volts DC (I think around 130VDC that's why the boards say "HOT" where the backlight supply is.)

I Have A PN63B550T2FXZA S401... my daughter kept blowing the house fuse that caused the TV to not turn on...only the red light stays on and the remote and physical on/off doesn't work... tried all resets and replaced cords, even plugged into wall directly...still nothing ( Note: I leave it plugged in and all it does is click, red light blinks once every 30mins )..HELP... what do I need to replace inside???? __Wolvff@gmail.com

Wolf Jefferson - Ответить

Likely the power supply board as my first guess. I have heard of that clicking noise syndrome. If she has blown the house fuse repeatedly, there could have been power surge like situations involved, either when the fuse blew or when power was restored. Here is a link to our answers forum, you should ask this question there as well.

The standby light is solid but it won't turn on. Sometimes unplugging and replugging works. When it is on it works fine. Tried the remote and the standby light flickers, so there is a signal. I have the back off and everything looks fine, except my gutted t.v. I'm afraid my t.v. might be on its last legs.

My Samsung un65ju6500 has no standby light at all. I was watching tv the night before and turned it off before I went to sleep and the red standby light came on. The next night I went to turn on my tv and I noticed that the red standby light wasn’t on after I had already hit the power button on my remote. I tried lol of the resetting steps and still no standby light. Might just be time to trash the unit lol.

Hello, I have a Q60 Samsung. As soon as I plug in the mainboard, the backlight turns off. It doesn`t make any difference to unplug the display cables, speakers or anything else. Means, even if I attach the mainboard without any other cable being attached, the backlight turns off immediately (when pluging in the power board cable to the main board

So I assume, it is not the power board or either the screen, right? But are there any parts on the main board I could check?

Thanks a lot
