Background and Identification
Released in 2009, the Dell Studio line consists of laptops and desktops aimed at the mainstream consumer market. In terms of price and specifications, the Dell Studio line ranks above the Dell Inspiron laptops and below the XPS consumer line. Unlike Dell’s lower-end Inspiron models, the Studio laptops offer slot-loading optical drives, media keys, more cover design options, faster processor options, HDMI and eSATA ports, LED-backlit screens and backlit keyboards.
During its original launch, the Studio came in three models: the Studio 15, the Studio 17, and the Studio Hybrid. The Studio 15 and Studio 17 were named after their respective screen sizes in inches. Then, the Studio Hybrid is named for its use of laptop components in the form of an ultra small-form factor desktop. As a compact desktop legacy-free PC using laptop components, the Hybrid contains the same slot-loading optical drive as the laptops with the range of connectivity (i.e. number of USB ports) expected with a desktop PC.
For those who purchase the Studio laptops online, there are a variety of colors to choose from and many other customizable options including a fingerprint scanner in some countries. As of May 2011, Dell has discontinued the Studio line of notebooks.
